Immunogenicity and safety of Purified Duck Embryo Rabies Vaccine

Purified Duck Embryo Rabies Vaccine (PDEV) is used as a preexposure vaccination to determine the safety and immunogenicity of the vaccine. Thirty-one healthy volunteer men are vaccinated on days 0, 28, 56 and antibody titer are determined by EIA on blood samples obtained on days 0, 7, 28, 60 and 90. Following the second dose, the seroconvertion rate is 70.9%; this is 96.7% on day 90. The pre-exposure schedule applied in this study, although effective for eliciting protective levels of anti-rabies antibodies, does not have high enough titers to predict whether the vaccine is highly immunogenic. PDEV is found to be a safe vaccine, reasonably priced, and may be employed for pre-exposure prophylaxis of rabies.
