Özet

The purpose of our study was to compare the t scores of spinal cord injured patients with different levels of weight bearing. A cross-sectional study comparing three groups of spinal cord injured patients was conducted: Patients with a daily standing time of more than 1 hour, less than 1 hour and nonstanding patients. Seventy-one chronic spinal cord injured patients were recruited. They were assigned to one of three groups according to their daily standing time. The bone density of lumbar and proximal femoral regions was measured with dual-energy x-ray absorptiometry (DEXA). Three groups were similar in terms of demographic and clinical variables. No significant difference was found among the mean t scores of lumbar and proximal femoral regions of the groups. However, for the group standing more than 1 hour there was a slight tendency to have higher t scores than those of the control group. In conclusion, standing can be only partially helpful in protecting the bone density in spinal cord injury.
