Özet

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the role of prophylactic estrogen administration on preventing intrauterine adhesion formation following D&C. STUDY DESIGN: Fifty-eight cases who were performed D&C for missed abortion were included into the study. Twenty cases were given prophylactic doxycycline (group A) and 19 cases were given prophylactic doxycycline plus conjugated equine estrogen (group B). Nineteen cases were not given any treatment at all (group C). Following D&C, diagnostic hysteroscopy was performed in all cases 8 weeks later. RESULT(s): Intrauterine adhesion formation was detected in 13 cases during control hysteroscopy: in 6 (30 %) cases in group A (n=20), in 2 (10.5 %) cases in group B (n=19), and in 5 (26.3 %) cases in group C (n=19). There was no statistically significant difference between the groups in terms of intrauterine adhesion formation. CONCLUSION(s): We have found out that estrogen administration following D&C does not have a beneficial effect on adhesion prevention. It is necessary to perform large-scale studies before reaching a definitive and reliable result.
