Spontaneous dislocation of the radial head in children with cerebral palsy: Report of two cases and review of the literature

Özet
The incidence of spontaneous dislocation of the radial head (SDRH) in children with cerebral palsy (CP) is not known definitely. We aim to call attention of the physicians and physiotherapists to this rarely encountered concomitance and also touch upon the therapeutic approaches in the light of the literature. A 14-year-old quadriplegic boy and A 13-year-old quadriplegic girl with CP were admitted to our out-patient clinic because of pain and motion restriction in elbow. In the bi-directional elbow x-ray; the radial heads were observed to be dislocated in the anterolateral direction. Both elbow was evaluated as Ashworth 3. A static splint with 90° elbow flexion was applied for 4 weeks and then rehabilitation was applied for 8 weeks. In the control examination three months later, the pain was observed to be reduced and on the 6 months visit, the pain was relieved and the active and passive range of motion were increased. It should be kept in mind that SDRH may be seen in patients with CP. In such patients, conservative treatment methods should be applied before performing major surgical treatments.
