Özet
As changes occur in many systems depending on age, macular degeneration develops in the eyes with the influence of photoreceptors, retinal pigment epithelium, bruch membrane and choriocapillaris. There are many factors that are effective in the development of macula degeneration. Although factors that are not related to nutrition such as age, gender, ethnicity, smoking status, and oxidative stress are factors that cause macular degeneration; obesity, high glycemic index of consumed foods, inadequate intake of omega-3 fatty acids and antioxidant vitamins and minerals are factors related to nutrition. According to World Health Organization report, macular degeneration is one of the most important eye diseases that cause vision loss. Therefore, it is necessary to know the nutritional related modifiable factors which can cause macular degeneration and they need to be used to prevent the development and progression of the disease. The purpose of this review is to identify risk factors, especially nutritional risk factors, that are the basis for the development of macular degeneration.
