Özet

Despite the fact that DEX is used as a codrug for anesthesia, the results of experimental and clinical investigations indicate that further investigations may reveal additional indications. Its effects on vascular tissue, in particular, should be investigated in more detail because of its effects on 2-adrenergic receptors. The present authors suggest that, in addition to its protective effect on the cardiovascular system, investigating its effect on brain neurodegenerative diseases of the central nervous system may also be quite interesting. Its biphasic effect on vascular tissues, especially its masked vasodilatory effect, is a current topic of great interest to researchers and is a candidate for more detailed investigation in future studies. Its low side effect profile in therapeutic doses makes it superior to many other known anesthetic drugs. The authors conclude that in the future it would not be surprising to see DEX as the first-choice anesthetic in lots of surgeries, especially in cardiovascular ones because of its effects on vascular tissues. © 2011 Elsevier Inc.
