Özet
Medical history is the golden key to the most accurate diagnosis and treatment of diseases and medical conditions. A well-conducted history-taking process can highlight and address the main problem effectively. Hence, medical students receive their first lectures on the importance of taking a medical history. The newborn period is a unique, complex, and rapidly evolving phase that marks the transition from being a newborn to an infant. During this time, the developing newborn must adapt from in utero conditions to the external environment. The vulnerable newborn must grow, develop, and complete the maturation processes of many body systems, including vital respiratory, cardiac, and immune functions, during this transition. As a result, the first 28 days of life have become a specific subspecialty known as 'neonatology' within the broader field of pediatrics. Taking a medical history at any stage of childhood can be challenging due to communication barriers, developmental immaturity, and the relatively subtle nature of neonatal diseases. However, it is especially challenging during the newborn period. Hence, taking a medical history in newborns is a specialized skill that requires meticulous attention to detail and a compassionate approach. It prioritizes the newborn's unique needs along with the family's contributions. This chapter outlines the principles and methods effective for gathering a comprehensive medical history of newborns. It emphasizes the importance of considering maternal and familial factors, perinatal history, and early postnatal observations.
