Özet
The genus Rickettsia consists of a special group of microorganisms in the Rickettsiaceae family, which are in the form of small, aerobic pleomorphic coccobacilli, have transitional characteristics between bacteria and viruses, and are obligate intracellular (Kapil, A., 2014). Rickettsiae are a heterogeneous group that cause febrile diseases with clinically mild to life-threatening manifestations, and these organisms show tropism to the endothelium of small-and medium-sized blood vessels (Holmes, F., 2018., Sahni, S. K., et al., 2013). Injury and inflammation of the endothelium of capillary blood vessels by rickettsia trigger increased vascular permeability causing pulmonary edema, hypovolemic hypotension, rash, cerebral edema, and organ failure (Chapman, A. S., et al., 2006). Relapsing typhus (Brill-Zinsser disease) and epidemic typhus engendered by Rickettsia prowazekii, and endemic typhus engendered by Rickettsia typhi form the typhus group and O. Tsutsugamushi, which is different in structure from other rickettsia, is the agent of scrub typhus (James, W. D., et al., 2006., Watt, G., et al., 2006). Doxycycline is the treatment of preference for patients of all ages with rickettsial fever (Chapman, A. S., et al., 2006). There is no effective vaccine yet to prevent rickettsial diseases.
